Biffa and Carlsberg UK Launch Glass Recycling Solution

Innovative scheme set to save publicans money and benefit the environment.

Carlsberg UK this week became the first brewer to launch a glass recycling solution for publicans. The innovative scheme, Carlsberg Green, will save the average pub owner over £460 per year, and up to £586 per year once the Landfill Tax escalator increases in April 2008. Carlsberg Green is also an easy way for pubs to help the environment.

Carlsberg Green, has been launched in association with recycling specialists, Biffa. It is an easy and inexpensive alternative to landfill. Furthermore, due to the Government's insistence that public money should not be used to provide recycling services for commercial enterprises, there is an even greater need for a cost-effective solution from the private sector.

David Scott, Carlsberg UK's Head of On-Trade Customer Marketing explained that from April this year, Landfill Tax will increase year-on-year by £8 per tonne, putting an average 20 per cent extra on disposal costs for publicans.

"In the current economic climate, we realised that the tax changes will hit pubs' bottom line by a significant amount. Carlsberg Green addresses this problem by helping publicans comply with legislative changes, reduce waste and offset recycling costs."

"Recycling through Carlsberg Green actually costs less than landfill disposal and also enhances pubs' green credentials" David said. "We encourage publicans to use the tax changes to their advantage by making the switch from landfill disposal."

Trying to manage recycling at the Kings Arms in Manchester has proven difficult for Joanne Byrnes, "We felt really guilty chucking out our glass with the rest of the rubbish. We had contacted our local council but nobody offered any recycling solutions. I was really happy to find that Carlsberg and Biffa provided this service."
