New Recycling Service for Stafford
11th February 2008
Biffa are claiming a logistical success after more than 5,000 homes in Stafford were the first to receive a new recycling service on Monday (4 February 2008).
Following the award of the Stafford Borough waste collection and recycling for the next six years, Biffa has rolled out a new service that has seen more than 55,000 homes issued with a new bin to recycle their rubbish. The blue, wheeled bin will take all plastic food and drink containers, bottles, glass and tin and has a separate internal compartment for newspapers and magazines.
The first collection went ahead last Monday, and more than 5,500 homes put their bins out for collections.
"It was a great success and augers well for the rest of the Borough," said Biffa regional municipal manager, Zak Shell. "It follows trials in the Eccleshall and Parkside areas of the Borough, which have seen recycling rates reach nearly 60 per cent compared to less than 30 per cent for the rest of the area. We've also implemented similar schemes elsewhere in the country and seen recycling rates increase significantly, so confidence is high in Stafford that we'll reach the Council's recycling and recovery targets."
The improved new service will allow householders to have their waste collected on the same day - with recyclables one week and non-recyclables the following week. A brown bin is also provided for the disposal of garden waste and cardboard.
Councillor Stan Highfield, cabinet member for environment and health, said: "We want to be up with the best recycling local authorities in the country and to greatly reduce the amount we are sending to landfill - and this service can help us achieve that."
