New standard for waste workers

For the first time, a National Vocational Qualification is providing municipal waste collection operatives with a standard by which they can demonstrate the quality of their work.

The National Vocational Qualification, known as the ‘Waste Management Operations’ Level 2 NVQ, is being made available by Biffa to all of its municipal waste collection crews.

The qualification sets a new operational standard for waste collections. It has been developed by the Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board (WAMITAB) in association with the waste management industry and examines an operatives understanding of the key issues essential to the performance of their job. This includes health and safety, environmental protection, emergency procedures, working as a team, how to deal with the public, an understanding of support infrastructure, maintenance and security, control of vehicle movements and the removal of waste.

The aim is to train and assess crew members to a nationally recognised waste industry standard. The training will be delivered using internally qualified assessors and funding from the Learning & Skills Council.

Biffa Collection Director, Nick Gregg said, "This is an investment in people. In training and assessing our front line operatives to a nationally recognised waste industry standard we can provide them with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability with a recognised qualification. This will serve to raise the overall professionalism and consistency of waste collection crews across the municipal contracts we operate."
